What’s Happening in Your Body During Breathwork
At a certain point in breathwork, your body starts to feel different. Your hands might tingle. Your chest might feel more open, or tighter. You might feel light, heavy, warm, or slightly disoriented. For a lot of people, the first reaction is to question it. Is this normal? Am I doing this right?
It is normal. Your body is responding to a shift in how you’re breathing, and that change has real physiological effects.
Breathing is not just something that keeps you alive. It plays a role in how your entire system functions, especially your nervous system. Most of the time, your breath runs in the background without much attention. But when you begin to change the rhythm or depth of your breathing, you start to influence your internal state.
Slower, more controlled breathing can support a sense of calm and regulation. Faster or more active breathing can increase alertness and sensation in the body. Neither is right or wrong. They just create different responses.
One of the main things happening during breathwork is a change in the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your body. When you breathe more than you normally would, especially in a continuous pattern, you tend to release more carbon dioxide. This can shift your blood chemistry and affect how oxygen is delivered throughout the body.
As a result, you might notice sensations like tingling in your hands or face, lightheadedness, or changes in temperature. These sensations can feel unfamiliar, but they are common responses to changes in breathing.
Your nervous system is also responding in real time. The breath is directly connected to the part of your system that regulates stress, safety, and relaxation. As your breathing changes, your nervous system can begin to shift states.
For some people, that feels like a sense of calm or release. For others, it might feel like increased energy or emotional intensity. This is not random. It is your system adjusting.
There is also something else happening that is a little less obvious. When your nervous system shifts, your awareness can shift with it. You may start to notice sensations, emotions, or internal experiences that are usually in the background. Not because they suddenly appeared, but because your attention is no longer pulled somewhere else.
In a way, you are becoming more aware of what is already there. Sometimes this can feel clear and grounding. Other times it can feel unfamiliar or even overwhelming. If that happens, it does not mean you have gone too far. It usually means your system is experiencing something it is not used to staying with.
You can always slow your breath, return to a more natural rhythm, or pause completely. You are in control of the experience.
It is also worth saying that not every session will feel intense. Some sessions feel subtle. Some feel quiet. Some feel like nothing much is happening at all. That does not mean it is not working. Your body does not always change in obvious ways. Sometimes the shifts are gradual or happen beneath the surface.
Breathwork is not about creating a specific sensation or chasing a certain kind of experience. It is about learning how your body responds and building a relationship with it.
Over time, what once felt unfamiliar can start to feel more natural. And what once felt overwhelming can start to feel manageable.
If you notice sensations during a session, you do not need to analyze them. You can just observe them. Let them be there without needing to change them.
Your body knows how to move through this. This is a process of becoming more aware, not more controlled. And that awareness is where change begins.
