What to Do If Breathwork Feels Overwhelming
Sometimes a session can feel like a lot. Your body might feel flooded with sensation, your emotions might rise quickly, or your thoughts might start to race. When that happens, it is easy to wonder if you have gone too far or done something wrong.
You have not.
Intensity can be part of the experience, especially when your system is doing something it is not used to. But there is a difference between intensity and overwhelm. Intensity still feels like something you can stay with. Overwhelm feels like you are losing your footing.
If that happens, the most important thing to remember is that you can always come back to yourself.
You can slow your breath down. Let it return to a natural rhythm. You can pause completely if you need to. Open your eyes. Feel the ground beneath you. Bring your attention to something steady and familiar.
You are not locked into the experience. You are allowed to adjust at any point.
Sometimes it helps to make the breath smaller instead of bigger. Less effort, less depth, less intensity. Let the body settle rather than trying to move through it.
You do not need to push through discomfort to get something out of this. In most cases, the more you listen to your body, the more supportive the experience becomes.
Overwhelm does not mean you failed. It usually means your system reached its current edge. And edges can shift over time when they are approached with care.
There is no rush. You can always come back to the practice in a way that feels more manageable.
Breathwork works best when it feels like something you can stay with, not something you have to endure.
